Deep Tissue Massage is an extremely effective treatment that involves the manipulation of the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue. Although other types of massage rejuvenate the body and make you feel relaxed, a deep tissue massage provides therapeutic effects that can aid in the healing or repairing of the body’s tissues, muscles, and joints.

Deep tissue massage requires more pressure than your typical relaxing massage, it’s a type of massage that focuses on the deeper layers of muscle tissue. It can be very beneficial to those who have experienced injury, are recovering from an illness or surgery, or are experiencing chronic pain. The main benefit of a deep tissue massage is that it relieves stress and tension, and can help you to relax. Deep tissue massages are also great for people who have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia, arthritis, and other health issues.

Deep Tissue Massage

Deep tissue has been found to improve muscle function and range of motion, break up scar tissue and adhesions, and decrease pain. It is thought that when muscles are tensed, they block oxygen and nutrients, leading to inflammation that builds up toxins in the muscle tissue.  A deep tissue massage may help loosen muscle tissues, release toxins from muscles and get blood and oxygen circulating properly. Because many toxins are released, it is recommended to drink plenty of water after a deep tissue session to help eliminate these toxins from the body.

Deep Tissue Massage

Chronic stress and muscle tension cause inflammation, which can worsen your overall health. A deep tissue massage is a solution to all the stress life throws at you. A good massage also helps with back pain. A 2014 study from the Scientific World Journal found that deep tissue massages reduce pain in people with chronic symptoms better than painkillers.

Athletes are prone to muscle injury and soreness. Coaches, athletes, and professionals in sports medicine recommend getting a massage. The benefits are amazing: athletes increase their blood flow, reduce muscle tension, and have an increased sense of well-being. Deep tissue massage is much more than just a “hard massage.” In contrast to only relaxing muscles, the specific lengthening of fascia, muscles and tendons offers many benefits such as increased joint movement, quicker injury recovery, and better posture. Research shows that a massage can help an athlete’s overall performance, recovery and muscle injury prevention.

Deep Tissue Massage

At certain points during the massage, most people find there can be some discomfort and pain. It is important to tell the therapist when they hit a tender spot and if any discomfort you experience is outside your comfort range. Due to the focused nature of the session, the treatment can become intense at times. Occasionally there is some stiffness or tenderness after a deep tissue massage, but it should subside within a day or so. The massage therapist may suggest applying ice to the area after the deep tissue massage.

It is important to note that deep tissue massage is not only used for relaxation, but more for rehabilitation and therapeutic purposes. Thus, expect to feel some degree of discomfort during the massage and after having it since this type of massage is focused on easing tension and strain from deeper tissues.
